I first became aware of these little guys when I was substitute teaching. One of the kindergarten teachers, as well as the Special Education Teacher, were using these with the little guys who were learning to read, in order to help them make tracking from left to right a little more fun and exciting.
The little guys would put these flashlights on their index finger, and then turn the flashlight on in order to highlight the words as they read.
Brilliant? I thought so.
When I subbed for the Special Education teacher, she'd have me use these finger flash lights and track the words as I read them from a story to a child, one on one. I'd dim the lights down in the room so that the flashlight would stand out a little bit more. With practice, the little one and I would highlight the words together, both of us working on tracking from left to right.
If you've ever tried to teach someone how to read, you know that tracking from left to right is imperative. It can also be a skill that some kids struggle with.
If you've ever had a reluctant reader (hello, middle child, raise your hand here) you know that anything that will make reading more fun is worth it's weight in gold. (And hey, these things are only $7.99 for 20 lights. There are others, that are similar to these, that are around the same price, maybe more, maybe less.)
So, I thought I'd pass this information along to you. I saw the finger lights on Amazon this morning, and I wanted to share this fun little tidbit with anyone who might be working on pre-reading skills with a little one.
I do need to mention here, this post contains affiliate links to my Amazon account. The picture, as well as the text in bold are active links to my Amazon Affiliates account. Your purchase through the link goes to help support this blog. Thank you!!
