Summer Reading Program @ Your Local Library (and a few other places, too...)

Summer brings a lot of fun for kids, with a nice dose of some freedom from learning tossed in.  Some of my fondest memories from childhood were our weekly trips to the library to pick up a new pile of books for the week.

I did the same with my kids when they were growing up.  Our oldest is 22, and home for the summer.  Last night, he was giving me a hard time because I hadn't gone to the library on Wednesday like I used to when he was a kid.  So.... 7:00 last night found us at our library, checking out books.

Have you checked out the summer reading program at your local library?

Our library has these fantastic programs for babies, kids, teens, and adults:

Once you register, and as you complete the challenges along the journey, you get cool prizes.  I remember tickets to the zoo, meals at a pizza place, and free tickets to minor league baseball games.
The adult reading program is great, because we turn in a quick summary of a book we've read and get entered into drawings for book baskets, and other very cool stuff.

BUT, did you know that libraries aren't the only place that offer summer reading incentives?

Check out these super fun deals:

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program - Read any 8 books and record them on the reading journal.  (It's a PDF on the homepage.  The link is above.)  Receive a free book from the pre-selected incentive books in store.

Scholastic Summer Reading Program - Register and log your minutes.  The United States School with the most number of minutes logged reading will win an author visit.  Elementary winner will get a visit from Michael Northrop, top Middle School will get Varian Johnson.  Their goal is to set a world record for reading.

Books a Million is also offering a summer reading program.  This one requires an in-store visit to sign up, and reading from their approved list.  Finishers receive a free Camp Half Blood tote bag.  (Great incentive for middle ages/grades)

I'm not receiving any kind of anything from these listings.  I just wanted anyone with kids to know that there are some great programs to keep them reading through the summer!
